Jaime has always loved reading; fantasy novels have always been her favorite. It wasn’t until 2005, when an author friend asked her to read and critique his book, that she became interested in reading books in a different way. She began beta reading and offering insights on her friend’s books, he writes steadily so she was not at a loss for practice.
While Jaime was beta reading, she found that she had an eye for detail. Jaime was picking up inconsistencies within the narrative’s story and spelling usages, and finding errors with grammar. Once Jaime noticed she was picking up on these new aspects, she began proofreading (more accurately a very light copyedit) for her friend to help correct these errors.
Jaime proofread for her friend for many years in an unofficial capacity. Jaime thoroughly enjoyed what she was doing and decided that she wanted to be a copyeditor. Jaime was lucky to have her friend to fall back on. He allowed her to look over some of his work that she had beta read years earlier and gained practical experience in this manner.
In 2014, Jaime decided to take the certificate program, Professional Sequence in Editing, offered by UC Berkeley Extension. Jaime also began working with Wyrding Ways Press in July of 2014.
Through UC Berkeley Extension, Jaime was introduced to Lorna Partington Walsh, founder of the Embark Editorial Agency, an agency that allows new copyeditors to gain experience by working in a pro bono capacity. The agency has helped broaden Jaime’s copyediting horizons. With them, she’s gained experience editing nonfiction, blog posts, and short stories for a literary magazine. Working closely with a team of editors has allowed her to ask questions that she wouldn’t normally be able to ask.
Jaime loves working closely with the author, it allows her to ask detailed questions that allow her to do a better job copyediting. Copyediting is always about the author and retaining their voice, so the more one-on-one time she can get with the author, the more she can understand their writing style and can help preserve their voice when making decisions about style and word choices.
Please feel free to send Jaime an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org, She’d love to answer any questions you may have. She also offers sample edits to new clients. Please send the first five pages of your manuscript and she will provide you with a sample edit of those pages (please note that if you send me more than five pages, only five of the pages will be edited; the industry standard for words per page is 250). If the pages are not formatted correctly to reflect the industry standard words per page, Jaime will format them accordingly.

Medium Copyediting: This corrects errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, and style; checks citations or key facts; and flags any inaccuracies and inconsistencies within the narrative; it also flags any redundancy, repetition, poor word choice, wordiness, overuse of the passive voice, poor logic or lack of clarity, incorrect idiomatic usage, and biased language.
